Bio
Maritess was born and raised in Chicago where she studied sculpture, painting and art history in college. She started to learn magic as a child at the age of 12. One of her early favorite effects was the cigarette-through-quarter trick. Maritess says she started in magic because she would do anything to find unconditional love. She attended the Arts Institute of Chicago as an art history major. However, Maritess later dropped out of art school to become a magician in Las Vegas. Beginning her career as a close-up artist with an expertise in card and coin magic helped her deal blackjack at every major casino. She also worked as a fortune teller and baccarat player before becoming part of a gambling team.
She supported herself as a blackjack dealer until “the evilness of gambling” chipped away at her morale. Maritess found work at magic shops, performed close-up magic for tips, gave psychic readings, all while studying with Gary Darwin in las Vegas for seven years. With Darwin, Maritess became skilled in mentalism, magic and sleight-of -hand. In 2000 she was nominated for competition in the Federacion Internacionale Societe Magique 2000 in Portugal, considered the Olympics of Magic. In 2002 Maritess has toured with her successful full stage illusion show "Maritess: Queen of Magic" throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. "Queen of Magic" is a true-life magic show, exhibited through her illusions her struggle as a suicidal teen who escapes her haunted past through discovering love in the subculture of magic.
Maritess transports her audience to magical events in her life using ghost manipulation, psychological transformations and skilled sleight-of-hand. That same year, she showcased a limited-run performance called "GIRLIEMAGIC: THE LIFE OF A PROFESSIONAL FEMALE MAGICIAN," in New York. This show is a compilation of 12 years of wonderful friendships, magical moments, education and blatant misogynistic hatred she's received from the magic community. Following a the successful summer run of "Queen of Magic" and "GIRLIEMAGIC," Maritess launched "True Magic Stories," a magical opus enriched by an affinity for storytelling, blended with dark humor. Maritess has been featured on Lifetime Television, Newsday, VH1 and in media around the world, including Japan’s TV network, NHK. For more information see
