It takes a trick to get women waving the magic wand

Comparable to the movie "The Seven Samurai," 7 of today's best skilled men have been assembled to conquer all who cross their path. However, instead of a bushido blade, it's a magic-weilding wand. And instead of Samurai, they are super skilled magicians - and they're ready to slay their victims with the art of astonishment. The show is called "The Illusionists;" a mega-scale magic show that has been touring the nation and will make it's world premiere at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday, according to the The Australian.com. The show hosts a myriad of today's international top wizards, including anti-conjuror Dan Sperry, mentalist Philip Escoffey; escapologist Andrew Basso, alchemist of magic Kevin James and Master illusionist Brett Daniels. Seems like a uber awesome cast of master magicians... however, the show does not feature women. "Usually the women are the assistants," Basso says. "They are not less important than the artist because sometimes they do most of the jobs... Maybe they are not recognised as much as they deserve." Italian-born Basso, 26, estimates that about 4 per cent of magicians are women. Daniels, who spearheaded the shows casting exclaimed: "Fewer girls were interested in becoming magicians," he says. "However, that's changed recently. In the past five or six years, there are some girls who have become more interested in magic." He tried to get Melinda Saxe (formally known as Melinda: "The First Lady of Magic," and Chinese-born manipulator Juliana Chen in the act. "Neither . . . was available for our show," Daniels says. If your a gamer, and a magician, then this game's for you. "As a magician, your Sim begins their career on the streets performing magic tricks for tips. They’ll visit new venues and meet with the owners to book larger gigs and gain experience. Magicians have unique social interactions that give them the ability to perform small-scale tricks on other Sims such as pulling a coin from an ear and making butterflies and doves magically appear. As magicians level up, they acquire new objects that can be used on-stage. For some magical fun, your Sims can use the Box of Mystery to perform the “swords of destiny” by carefully placing knives through the box without stabbing the Sim inside. Beware the Box of Danger! If a Sim fails at correctly executing their tricks with this object, death may come calling." Princess Tenko declines Kim funeral invite

We noted last week that Tenko Hikita, otherwise known as Princess Tenko, had been invited to the funeral of Kim jong il. Well, the verdict is in... After much deliberation, Tenko decided to turn down North Korea's invitation according to the Japan Times. "I decided to refrain from taking part in an official event taking all circumstances into consideration," Tenko, said in a statement released Monday. Kim was seemingly fond of the magician, as he invited her to North Korea to perform in 1998 and 2000. "For the 1998 show, where she escaped from a tank of water, Kim reportedly ordered for the 2-ton tank to be filled to the brim with Evian mineral water, worried that North Korean water might damage her skin, according to the South Korean press." Interesting tidbit, eh? Note to self: North Korean water - bad... high-end, pricey French water - good.

VanBurch makes tax evasion charges vanish

Looks like Branson illusionists Kirby and Bambi VanBurch are off the hook from charges of tax evasion according to News-leader.com. The assistant prosecuting attorney for Stone County, Dayrell Scriver who is handling the case against the VanBurches, confirmed that the charges were dropped recently after the two made a "large payment." He also noted that negotiations had been conducted between him, the VanBurches and their attorneys and the Missouri Department of Revenue. "There was a large payment made that goes to the state and the county," Scrivner said. "In lieu of payments, we dismissed the charges." Scrivner could not divulge the size of the payment, and that they're still working out the kinks. It's possible that they may have to dish out more payments if necessary. The former magic duo filed for divorce at the end of August in 2009, and was finalized last year. Bambi VanBurch also launched a solo career in 2009, billing herself as the "Princess of Magic"(Kirby was named the "Prince of magic" by the Princess of Thailand) performing in Branson and touring the country. She also has a website in the works - keep an eye out for that. Bambi recently rejoined the "Kirby VanBurch Show" this season, so be sure to check them out while they're still making magic together.

Illusionist invited to Kim Jong il funeral

Female enchantress Tenko Hikita, better known as Princess Tenko, must have made a pretty darn big impression on Kim Jong il, when she performed for him in North Korea back in 1998 and 2000. According to her manager, she received a phone call and email form one of Kim's relatives the day after the North Korean dictator's death was announced on Monday. The Japanese illusionist was invited to attend Kim Jong's funeral to be held Dec. 28. Tenko has not yet decided wether she will attend (she's probably working on an escape act for that one). What's more, the invitation was extended despite Kim's son, Pyongyang's decision to prohibit any foreign dignitaries to the funeral (looks like somebody's in trouuuble). Check out her water tank escape on the "World's Greatest Magic" NBC television special which turned the heads of millions of American TV viewers (including mine!).

Hans Klok to deliver a 'Houdini Experience'

The ever so dramatic Dutch illusionist, will be traveling to London for the first time ever to showcase his brand new show entitled, "The Houdini Experience" Starring Hans Klok & Company. Klok, billed the "Dutch David Copperfield," and "The fastest magician in the world," will be performing at the Peacock Theatre for a five week engagement. His show - described as a "chilling, thrilling and breathtakingly amazing show," will feature his Divas of Magic (his beautiful scantily-cladded female assistants), a company of world-class variety and circus acts blending illusion, daredevil stunts, acrobats and wizardry in a Barnum and Baily-esque like atmosphere (minus the circus elephants and their droppings). I was wondering where the "Houdini" experience fits into his variety-ladened show. Well, he does an act where he levitates "Houdini's" table ( looks like a Losander's Floating Table - my favorite), and he also performs a metamorphosis-type illusion where he is bound in chains and dunked into a plexi-box filled with water, only to magically trade places with one of his divas. Perhaps this is the Houdini experience we are to be given? (I believe it is) or maybe he threw the "Houdini" title on the marquee just to draw a larger audience? Hmmm... perhaps a bit of both? Mega illusionists attempt record-setting "mass mind reading" illusion

You've probably heard of illusion juggernauts, David Copperfield and Franz Harary, who have run the gamut in the "mega illusion" department performing such popular large-scale illusions, such as "walking through the Great Wall of China," and the vanishing of the Taj Mahal. But there's another breed of illusionists who have been making waves in Asia with their own feats of grand illusion, and their names are J C Sum and "Magic Babe" Ning. According to "Cannel NewsAsia.com," Singapore's celebrated magic duo J C Sum and 'Magic Babe" Ning are brewing up another massive illusion in which they will be attempting to set a new record (perhaps world record) by becoming the first illusionists ever to successfully read the minds of 100 volunteers in one sitting, during a grand mentalist act, entitled "The Mind Heist." "It is quite a big step to have the mega illusion streamed live because it pushes the envelope in presenting the illusion not just for a live audience, but to a worldwide audience of different tastes, cultures and perceptions," said Sum.  "The Mind Heist embraces the current social media age we are in.  "J C & I aim to create an innovative illusion, which empowers the audience," Ning added. This seems like a pretty big shindig of an event - and to even prove that their will be no cheating involved, the duo has called upon a committee from the Singapore Book of Records and the International Brotherhood of magicians (I.B.M) to further solidify their legitimacy of the stunt. The Mind Heist will go down at the Sinema Old School on January 7, 2012 and will be will be streamed live over the internet, so pretty much darn near anyone in the world can watch it. They are also still accepting applications for volunteers; so of you want your mind hijacked, you can register on the duo's website. The Mind Heist is the illusionists ninth mega illusion. Among Sum and Ning's other illusions are "The Impossible Teleportation," in which J C teleported himself from street level while surrounded by thousands of spectators and reappeared on the roof of a skyscraper, 50 floors above, and "The Arial Exit," where they vanished five audience members while they were elevated 24 ft in the air in front of over 1,000 spectators. Rick Thomas gives "Nutcracker" ballet a magical upgrade

When one thinks of the "Nutcracker" ballet, one thinks of sugar plum fairies, the harmonic strings of Tchaikovsky, and super flexible leotard-wearing dancers. However, one artistic director for local "Nutcracker" ballet has visions of large scale illusions - vanishes, appearances and levitation on his mind. When Robert Weiss, artistic director for Carolina Ballet's "Nutcracker" at UNC-Chapel Hill's Memorial Hall, heard it was time for the company to update it's 10-year old production with new sets, he went on an all-out trek to find a top Vegas illusionist to help him refresh the ballet with top-notch illusions. Enter master illusionist Rick Thomas. A friend recommended Weiss on the Vegas illusionist juggernaut, Thomas, who has astonished the world over with his mega illusions, involving exotic white tigers, motorcycles, and tropical birds. "I haven't ever been involved with a production in which the magic was not the whole show, but with my background, I said 'absolutely!' " Thomas said. Weiss and Thomas were both of the same mind about the scale of the new effects. "We didn't want it to be, 'here's the story, but now we're going to stop for a big illusion,'" Thomas said. The pair agreed that the effects should fit into the story's Victorian time period, especially in the Christmas party sequence. The results, according to Thomas, include every major form of magic, with objects and people appearing, disappearing, floating or flying."

David Copperfield makes magic with "EXTRA'S" Maria Menounos

Fresh of the "EXTRA" news press... "In an "Extra" magical "Moonlighting with Maria" segment, host Maria Menounos teamed up with world famous illusionist David Copperfield in Las Vegas to perform some of his greatest stunts. First thing's first, Menounos was asked to sign a secrecy agreement before jumping in to learn the masterful tricks. Copperfield said, "I'm going to teach you all kinds of stuff!" See Maria involved with magnetic forces, a motorcycle and a mysterious gaze! Incidentally, during the "motorcycle" illusion video, you can hear David speak softly to someone (Maria?). David Copperfield guest stars on "Wizards of Waverly Place"

According to the "Orlando Sentinel," The King of Magic, David Copperfield will work his magic mojo when he guest stars as himself on Disney's TV show "Wizards of Waverly Place" this Friday. We're not sure as to what the plot will be, whether he'll banish "Wizards" star, Selena Gomez from the face of the earth, or perform one of his killer illusions. "Although it might not be apparent at first, magician David Copperfield has a long history with the Walt Disney Co. "I started being a child of Disney certainly, and Walt Disney has been one of my inspirations my entire life. He took animation, a simple cartoon and told stories, got people to cry and laugh and feel things and teach them lessons. ... And that was my inspiration. I took magic and made it emotional and told stories." Copperfield, 55, has been performing since he was admitted into the Society of American Magicians at age 12. Through the years, he has won numerous honors, including 21 Emmy awards and 11 Guinness World Records. On Friday, he "closes the loop with the Disney family" when he guest stars as himself on Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place" at 8 p.m."

Dutch illusionist fined for copyright infringement

Dutch illusionist Hans Klok has been fined $16, 725 by a Dutch court for putting a rival's trick up his sleeve and trying to pass it off as his own. "He was sued for copyright infringement over a routine in which he fights with a stubborn butler, first apparently reaching through his body to grab a glass of water off a tray, then smacking off his head momentarily. Magician Rafael van Herck, Klok's former sidekick, said he developed the bit and took the case to court. Klok argued the tricks are no secret in Las Vegas , one was even used by Siegfried & Roy. But the court ruled Van Herck's combination is unique. Klok, whose long blond hair is constantly swept by a wind that seems to arise from nowhere, said he will reshuffle his act after Wednesday's ruling."

"ABC is looking for a little magic. The network has picked up drama project In Like Fin from Castle producer Alexi Hawley and My Generation’s Warren Littlefield. Based on David Blaine, the project revolves around Fin, an illusionist who is pulled into action in a covert government sting. Hawley will pen the drama and executive produce, with Littlefield attached as a nonwriting EP. Blaine is not attached to the project. Endurance artist Blaine, dubbed the modern-day Houdini, is best known for his high-profile illusions. In 1999, he was been buried alive in a plastic coffin underneath a three-ton water-filled tank for seven days across from Trump Place. He’s also been encased in a huge block of ice in Times Square for 63 hours. ABC aired Blaine’s first TV special, David Blaine: Street Magic, in 1997."

Siegfried & Roy win round in sexual harassment lawsuit

"Las Vegas entertainers Siegfried & Roy have won a $37,415 court award against attorneys who have been suing Roy over sexual harassment allegations. U.S. District Judge Roger Hunt in Las Vegas this week ordered attorneys for Oliver Preiss, a former personal assistant to Roy Horn, and for Preiss’s wife Beatrice; to pay the $37,415 as a sanction for asserting baseless legal claims against Horn and a company owned by Siegfried and Roy."
