Max Maven Gearing Up For Off-Broadway Run

Master mentalist Max Maven is getting mentally ready for his Off-Broadway run at the Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex, entitled "Max Maven: Thinking in Person." The show will begin June 12-July 1, with an opening on June 14, according to TheaterMania.com. "The world famous mentalist and master magician sets out to take the audience on a journey to explore some of the mysteries of the human mind and aims to challenge our assumptions of what we think we know with the mystery of what we can't know. The production will also feature Melanie Crispin in the role of The Assistant. Jules Fisher has designed the lighting and the set is designed by Alan E. Muraoka. Maven, who was named by Orson Welles as "the most original mind in magic," innovated many of the magical and mentalist effects that are used by other magicians such as David Copperfield, Penn & Teller, and Siegfried & Roy."

At 77, Kreskin Is Still Going Strong

One of the amazing things about the Amazing Kreskin, is that at 77, he's still boggling minds across the country. Touring with a busy schedule, Kreskin's always eager to accept Canadian dates because it was in Ottawa that he filmed "The Amazing World of Kreskin," the TV show that rocketed him to international stardom, according to CalgarySun.com. The show ran five and a half years, from 1970 to 1975, with 26 unscripted episodes a season. When asked ‘why Ottawa?’ he likes to say “because they came to me. In its first two years it was the second-highest-rated show in Canada next to Hockey Night in Canada.” Kreskin says he was influenced to become a magician and hypnotist by the comic strip Mandrake the Magician and it was his more than 80 appearances on the Tonight Show that inspired Johnny Carson’s skit Carnac the Magnificent." Kreskin is appearing at Stage West for one show only on Monday. Tickets are still available for this 6 p.m. show which includes Stage West’s 102 item buffet.

David Copperfield Sues Company Over Shoddy Work

Illusionist David Copperfield is suing a local company in a dispute over work at his $80 million Islands in Musha Cay in the Bahamas, according to VegasInc.com. "The suit says Splashes was hired to design, fabricate and install theatrical effects at the Islands of Copperfield Bay in Musha Cay, which is rented for $37,500 per day to groups of up to 12 people. Splashes was hired to work on features called the Secret Village Entryway or the Village Tunnel Entryway, but the features it installed “have proven defective,” and Splashes has failed to correct the problems, the suit says." Copperfield's people are going after Splashes principal Robert North, who walked off the job after 13 months of work. However, it looks like North has made a vanishing act. North could not be reached for comment on the suit and the phone number for Splashes is no longer active.

Comedy magician Murray Sawchuck has come full circle on the Las Vegas Strip landed a new gig performing at the Laugh Factory's new comedy club at the Tropicana Hotel starting May 1, according to Mike Weatherford from the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "He's perform his comedy magic and two signature illusions on a 360-degree platform in the middle of the audience at the hotel, which is undergoing a nearly $200-million renovation. The Burnaby Central grad, who now lives in Las Vegas, made the semi-finals on America's Got Talent in 2010. He also serves as the resident magic expert on the History Channel's Pawn Stars." Teller Sues to Protect Illusion

According to the Courthouse News Service, "Teller, the silent half of magician duo Penn and Teller, filed a federal complaint against a Dutch entertainer who has allegedly nicked his copyrighted performance piece, "Shadows," and offered to sell the secret to the signature illusion. Gerard Dogge, who performs under the name Gerard Bakardy, has been performing the trick that Teller copyrighted in 1983, according to the complaint. Calling his version "Rose & Her Shadow" in a YouTube video, Bakardy allegedly offers to sell the secrets behind the trick for $3,050. Teller says he offered to buy the trick "as it could be more efficient than filing a lawsuit," but Bakardy wouldn't bite. Instead of accepting Teller's terms, Bakardy "countered with a much higher sum that he would accept in payment for him to cease use and sale of the infringing work," according to the complaint."

Techno Illusionist Marco Tempest used Microsoft Kinect last month to illustrate a TED presentation called "Magic and Storytelling," according to SEATTLEPI.COM. "I like to think of it as a kind of technological magic," Tempest said at the start of his talk. The virtual features were not pre-rendered. Update - 3/29/12 Taiwanese wizard Louis Liu, aka Lu Chen, has won the "Magician of the Year" title awarded by the U.S. Academy of magical Arts and will receive his award in Los Angeles on April 1st, according to Focus Taiwan. Lu Chen: "I did not expect to win such an award this year -- I thought it would take me at least another 10 years." Man's Family Couldn't Escape Houdini's Last Days

Dave Bidini and Harry Houdini are both linked through an amazing chain of coincidental events, according to the National Post. Bidini: "My father, Dr. Wilfred Gallay (a McGill student at the time), was in the audience at the Princess Theatre in Montreal where he witnessed Harry Houdini’s last performance, where the escape artist received several blows to his stomach from another McGill student.  In an amazing coincidence, when Houdini collapsed a few days later in Detroit, he was rushed to Grace Hospital where my father’s sister, Dr. Minnie Gallay, was working as an intern in the ER. My aunt said there was nothing they could do for him." Houdini's cause of death was peritonitis caused by a ruptured appendix. I'm quite sure the blows to his abdomen further worsened his condition. Fascintaing first hand accounts into Houdini's last days.

Abbott's Magic Get Together Still Going Strong

Already lined up for this year's 75th Abbott's Get Together is Master Wizard Eugene Burger, Michael Finney and Dale Salwak, among others. If you've never been to the "Get Together," you have time to plan ahead. The magic shindig will happen August 1-4, 2012. Abbott's Get Together is a long running convention for magicians in the United States and around the world, which is held each year in Colon, Michigan. It was founded in 1937 by Percy Abbott (1886–1960) and his business partner, Recil Bordner. Mega Illusionist Franz Harary who's no stranger to the get together, talks about the history of the famed convention. He also mentions how the attendance has dropped over the years. Very sad to hear the numbers have dwindled, however, the magic hasn't completely fizzled away, and I truly think it never will. Barney's "magic teacher will be giving the ol' hocus pocus to his mom." "With that title, you knew there had to be something involving Barney and magic, and this will have the added bonus of bringing back Barney's mother. Barney has been shown to go overboard on the magic, and he had to learn it from somewhere." 88 Year Old Magician Retires His Wand

A veteran wizard by the name of Alan Goodall, is hanging up his cloak at the ripe age of 88. He has been performing for more than 6 decades and is now calling it quits, according to Maldon Standard. His last official performance was on Saturday, March 10 in Witham, England. "It has been a wonderful job but when I came in after the show on Saturday I knew why I have had enough,” he said. "I’m not ashamed to admit it but at 88 years of age I was exhausted, but that is fine at my age." Wow, what a life filled with magic! May we all live this long and prosper in the world of magic.

Never Before Seen Photo Of Houdini And Water Torture Cell

Wow! After 92 years a rare photograph of the legendary escape artist Harry Houdini is unearthed! According to WildAboutHoudini.com, This never before published photo of Houdini performing his famed Water Torture Cell was revealed last month at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as part of the City of Stars Exhibition. According to the Herald Scotland, this photo "was taken in 1920 and is the oldest image in the collection." It appears that this photo was taken prior to Houdini performing his escape, as for the cell appears to be without the stocks. The photo can be purchased at the Glasgow Herald website.

With magic now on the forefront in the movie industry such as "Now You See Me," and "Burt Wonderstone," Warner Bros. is delving deep into the annals of magic to produce "Mandrake the Magician," the 1930's comic pulp character created by Lee Falk, the author and brainchild of "The Phantom" comic. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Warner Bros. is now planning to create a film based on Falk's Mandrake The Magician. The story follows the titular illusionist, who has the ability to hypnotize people at great speed and have them do his bidding. Along with his African strongman parter, Lothar, Mandrake would work to rid the world of evil, "ranging from gangsters to masters of disguise to aliens." A few years back, Disney tried to breathe life into a "Mandrake" movie, however, it was scrapped when first Jonathan Rhys Meyers, then Hayden Christensen tried to take the helm. As we all know, master illusionist David Copperfield can render pretty much anything invisible, but can he cloak a car? Perhaps, but this "invisible" car was created without his magical prowess. This is pretty cool, "Time's - Techland.com" reports a "hydrogen-powered Mercedes car rendered all but invisible in multiple locations using a camera and a cloak of colored lights." How's the magic done? "With a whole bunch of LEDs draped over the vehicle to cover everything but the wheels, and a Canon 5D Mark II camera used to film the surroundings. Say you’re looking at the vehicle from one side — the camera transmits an image of the other to the LEDs, which then project a dynamic image on your side of the car, making it look as if you can see right through the vehicle." I'm sure many of you are familiar with the most disliked conjuror in all of magicdom - the "Masked Magician," you know, the one who broke the magicians code for a steady stream of income? Well, I just recently discovered that the Masked Magician that we know today (Val Valentino) was not the first illusionist to don a mask for a living. As a matter of fact, a Peruvian-born magician by the name of Jose' Antenor de Gago, who performed under the name, L'Homme Masqué (the Masked Man) preceded Valentino by almost 200 years!
